Anouk Govil – The Benefits of Going Kayaking

I met Anouk Govil when I first started university here in New York, he was from Connecticut and I helped him to acclimatize somewhat to this crazy city. Last month he invited me up to his home town to spend the Easter holidays and show off what people do back up in a far quieter part of the country. During our week of activities I fell in love with kayaking and I have since started to go out on a weekend to the Hudson River to get my fix! If you have the opportunity to go kayaking where you live here is why I think that you should.

The Peace

Even in a city as hectic as New York there is great peace to be found out there on the river, especially first thing in the morning. It was far more beautiful back in Connecticut I must admit but the tranquility of floating along the water is exactly the same. If you head out alone then you can enjoy taking some time out, watching the world go by as you gently sail on down the currents of the water. There is a great peace to be found out on the water when you do go kayaking.

Fitness

It is truly blissful when you are floating down stream but when the time comes to go up against the current you really have to put some effort in. This has proven great for me from a health standpoint and after just a few weeks of kayaking I can already feel me abs getting stronger as well as my arms. When you are in the kayak there is only you to power and maneuver it which isn’t always easy, regular trips to the water in your kayak will help your health.

Back to Nature

There is something very cathartic about getting in touch with nature, some do this by hiking through forests and jungles, sleeping wild, and others get it by taking to the water. I really have enjoyed this experience and floating on the water feels like something very human and something which really brings me a great deal of joy.

Buddy Up

When I hit the water with Anouk we had a great time and it is a wonderful way of catching up with someone. Together you can float downstream, slowly chatting about the world and enjoying some very personal time with your friends.

Fun

Beyond all other reasons kayaking is a just a very fun endeavor which will put a smile on your face. I’d recommend doing this first thing in the morning if you can because it will put you in a great mood for the rest of the day. This is a sport which is only as intense as you want it to be and one which will ultimately leave you happy to be alive.

Why not give it a try this week?

I started to look around to find a festival that was more than simple traditionalism. So I chose Holi in India and found this interesting festival with many different aspects. This festival will provide a warm welcome to all.

So, for one day and night, you will be able to celebrate the Holi tradition with friends, family members, and even strangers. Here is what you need to know.

Unique Destinations For Any Getaway

Planning that ultimate getaway that is a mix of both exciting and unique can sometimes be a challenge. In these days of Instagram, Facebook and more, it seems that everyone and their dog have been to the usual countries like Thailand, Mexico, Italy and more. What about those of us who crave something more – something truly unique? Something that doesn’t seem to always make the front page of social media? Here are some unique ideas you can consider for that getaway that might raise a few eyebrows.

Ireland

Have you or someone you know been to the wilds of the Emerald Isle? It may seem like it’s frequently visited, but it may surprise you if you sit down and really think about the people you know that travel that haven’t been! While it has a large tourist economy and is set up for tourists to enjoy the wilds of the Emerald Isle, a lot of people do tend to want warmth and sun during their holidays, something that Ireland can’t always guarantee. Never fear though – with rugged coastlines, amazing hospitality and Guinness that’s to die for, we’re pretty sure you won’t have too many complaints about choosing Ireland for your next getaway.

Russia

Want something that will really raise eyebrows? Why not try Russia? Many people haven’t gone to Russia for holidays, but we’re not really sure why. It’s a unique place with immense history and gorgeous architecture, along with absolutely scrumptious food – and we haven’t even mentioned the vodka! With cities like Moscow, St Petersburg and Yekaterinburg to choose from, the choices will impress and delight even the most discerning of travellers. Want something extra unique? Try the Trans-Siberian train route. You can take it from Moscow all the way to Beijing if you change in Irkutsk to a different line!

Iran

This is one that will really get people talking. Iran has long been seemingly closed off for tourists and travellers, but that’s a popular misconception. In fact, Iran is open to tourists of all kinds – just… not really Americans, Brits or Canadians really. To check out this beautiful and shockingly welcoming country as one of those three you’ll need to be a part of an official tour, but if you’re just about any other nationality, you’re free to go as you please. Get ready to be mobbed by friendly locals wanting to legitimately learn about you and your homeland, get invited for tea and meals, be offered lifts to neighbouring towns and more. Don’t miss the rainbow mosque in Shiraz for an impressive photo opportunity and a chance to just relax for a bit in the colourful silence.

The ‘Stans

Most people might think you as strange for wanting to visit any of the ‘Stans, but they are not just unique, but welcoming and stunningly beautiful. Their somewhat inaccurate reputation means that there’s not many tourists around, leaving you with amazing mosques and other tourist sites in the likes of Uzbekistan almost all to yourself. Don’t miss Samarkand or Bushara for ancient Silk Road sites as well as beautiful open air mosques, desert mausoleums and more that will surprise and delight you.

With so many cool, unique and often unvisited countries in the world to check out, if you’re up for a bit of a challenge, you’re likely to find yourself having the experience of a lifetime if you’re willing to go where few have gone before. Good luck!

European Destinations Not To Miss In 2019

Europe is one of the most sought after destinations when it comes to travelling – whether it’s a first time traveller, a seasoned globetrotter or a family getaway for the summer holidays. It’s got a bit of something for everyone, and with so many amazing countries to visit, it’s the perfect way to get the most out of any trip, whatever the length. But just which country or countries should you choose for that epic European adventure? Each has its own flavour, vibe and attractions, so how can you pick? Here’s a couple of top European destinations you should try this year.

Italy

One of the most popular options when it comes to European travel, Italy has a whole host of places to experience and things to do. Not only this, but it’s rich with history and beautiful cities to explore and even offers up some island life such as visiting the southern island of Sicily. If you’re looking for the real Italian experience though, consider a week or more in rural Tuscany, where the wine is to die for and the rolling hills will keep taking your breath away day after day.

Ireland

Ireland may seem sometimes rainy and gloomy, but that’s part of the charm. Don’t forget some warm clothes and waterproofs and you’re sure to have the time of your life exploring the Emerald Isle and all its unique villages, towns and cities. Kiss the Blarney Stone at Blarney Castle just outside Cork, catch the majestic Cliffs of Moher in county Clare or take a road trip around the Ring of Kerry – a well known route that takes you through some of the backcountry wilderness past lakes, through hills and tiny villages – some of which only got electricity in the last decade or two.

Greece

Who doesn’t want to while away the hours on a Greek island for their holiday. It’s the thing that dreams are frequently made of. With dozens of islands to choose from, plus a vast and interesting mainland rich with history and myths, Greece continues to delight visitors year after year and is almost always in the top five or ten for many people visiting Europe. Not to mention – the food is to die for, too!

Czech Republic

Known for being one of the stag party capitals of the world, the Czech Republic (sometimes known today as Czechia) is far more than just cheap beer and seedy bars. The beautiful and unique architecture of the place brings visitors from around the world to experience its museums, history and amazing food – a combination of Eastern European, German and Hungarian, the perfect mix! With spa towns and crazy sites to visit like the Ossuary at Sedlec in Kutna Hora, the Czech Republic will easily keep you guessing and engaged at every turn.

With so many cool destinations to choose from, how do you pick? If you like the sound of more than one place, why not consider a couple. The nice thing about Europe is the array of budget airlines meaning you can get from country to country quickly, easily and for far less than you might expect. Enjoy!

London

Easily one of the best places to start in the UK is the city of London. Home to so many things to see and do you might need to come back for round two, it’s a city that never sleeps and always seems to have something going on. Whether you explore solo or join one of the many amazing tours of London that are available, you’re sure to have a great time. Top notch locations for any visit to the capital include Covent Garden market, the Tower of London, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, the London Dungeon, and don’t forget that almost all of the museums in London are free. Add to this the enormous collection of restaurants, bars and nightclubs and you have the perfect place to start any trip.

Brighton

Not far from London, on the southern coast, is the small city of Brighton. This cute seaside town is known perhaps the best for its famous ‘Brighton Pier’, the UK’s take on California’s Santa Monica pier, but with a distinctly British flavour that includes penny arcades, the popular ‘Brighton Rock’ candy and a few fairground style rides and amusements. The city itself is a wonderful place to explore with tiny backstreets, hidden gems of restaurants and pubs and a vibrant night scene. The Brighton Pavilion, also known as the Royal Pavilion, a former royal residence, is a perfect way to spend an afternoon, wandering through its impressive halls and gardens. Hotels and accommodation in Brighton can vary from basic and budget friendly to lavish and luxurious with seaside views. What do you fancy?

Wiltshire and Somerset

If you like cider, beautiful country lanes and unique historical points of interest, you won’t want to miss Wiltshire and Somerset. Easily done in a day or two, these two counties are about an hour and a half to two hours from London by train, although renting a car is advisable if you want to get out of the main cities of Salisbury and Bath. Salisbury is home to the impressive Salisbury Cathedral, which also houses one of the last remaining original copies of the Magna Carta as well as some truly unique pubs and points of interest such as the Poultry Cross, Old Sarum and of course, Stonehenge is a short drive away (although you can take the Stonehenge tour bus which departs regularly from Salisbury station).

Somerset is similar and is a hilly, beautiful area with many villages you don’t want to miss including Wells and Glastonbury. Bath is the main city with its gorgeous Bath Stone architecture, the Roman Baths and the impressive Thermae spa, giving visitors the opportunity to bathe in the same waters as the Romans.

So what are you waiting for? Come check out the UK – or if you live there, take this opportunity to explore your own unique, engaging and impressive backyard. You honestly won’t regret it!

GoPro: The Best Setting To Make Awesome Travel Video

GoPro is the king when we talk about action cams as it’s the first action-cam on the market and inevitable leader in this category. It actually plays a great role in two main sectors: travel and sport. Many of us own a GoPro but each and every one of us don’t know how to actually use it to its full potential. Most of us don’t know to set it up properly while it can benefit us from all the functions it offers. I don’t claim myself to be an expert but I’d like to share you some tips throughout my career as a traveler.  My suggestions may also help the action-camera owners from different brands. So, let’s get started.

What GoPro camera is best for traveling?

Traveling doesn’t need that much of looking at the rear display as it needs while shooting action sports. However, a GoPro with an LCD screen is an essential one to get the perfect framing or your photos and videos. If you want to just take some simple photos and videos while traveling, then I’d suggest you go with the GoPro 4. But for a bit more professional editing GoPro videos, you should buy the GoPro 5 as it has the integrated video stabilization mode. The price of these two cameras varies but your choice depends on your budget. You’ll need to consider spending quite a bit of money if you’re thinking about buying a GoPro.

Why is a GoPro the best for traveling?

GoPro is a very tiny camera and it’s one of the most important features of this camera. With this small piece of technology, you will be able to take spectacular photos and videos. It has only a few centimeters in length and height, and it’s very easy to use. As it’s not a cumbersome thing, it’s very easy to be handled and to be carried around.
It has an integrated external case which makes it the best camera to take with you to the beach, sea, swimming pool and even on the ski slopes, as the case protects it from sand and water. It’s even the best camera to snap some photos with while you’re doing snorkeling because of its great handle floaty backdoor. You can use its incredible number of accessories in many different situations. You can also use it while practicing a sports activity rather than simply traveling. It allows you to take amazing panoramic shots and outstanding selfies as it has a 170° wide angle lens. You can also take gorgeous landscapes behind your shoulders when mounted on a selfie stick. You can remotely control the camera with the WiFi connection service and download the photos and videos you take from your smartphone directly. It helps you to share the photos on your social media apps and share them with your friends.

How to Set your GoPro for Traveling?

Here I have tried to cover all the detail on the five settings, both with photos and videos.

  1. Video Setting: 1080p wide at 60fps is the all-around best video setting. You can capture a good quality video with decent slow-mo capabilities with this setting.
You can experiment after getting the hang of shooting video with GoPro but choosing this setting would be ideal for you to get started and for dependable quality.
  2. Burst Mode: Burst mode should be chosen on 30 in 1 second or 30 in 3 seconds. If you want to capture the quick bursts of action, it’s the best mode then. When you press the shutter, the camera fires off your shots in a fast burst. Stop shooting right there. Either you can use a single shot from a burst or combine them together to show a nice sequence of action.
  3. Auto Low Light: With the help of auto low light, you can go from bright to low light settings without doing anything. If you do a lot of driving or biking videos while passing through sunny and shaded areas, this feature is perfect for you.
  4. Quick Capture: You can turn your GoPro camera into the one-button camera with the QuickCapture feature. It’s not a default setting, so you have to turn it on. You simply press and release the shutter button while your camera is powered off, and it starts recording video on its own. You can also start shooting time-lapse by pressing and holding until you see the time-lapse icon.
  5. ProTune:  Turn on the ProTune in order to get the best quality photos and videos. It gives you a range of options while you’re shooting and editing. It enables you to edit for a truer color result when you’re shooting in ProTune. But you can also just leave it off if you’re not interested in editing.

So, these are the five best settings for you. After some simple adjustments, your video will look amazing. Hopefully, these settings given above will help you to produce awesome travel videos. You can also invest in a carry case for your GoPro and its accessories. It helps to keep your GoPro, batteries, charger, LC screen, etc. in a safe place while you drift around shooting awesome footages.

How to Spend 48 Hours in Sydney

One of the most important and time-consuming things when planning a vacation is choosing accommodation. Many factors need to be considered such as how far it is from the airport or the center, does it have markets nearby, and, of course, price and comfort. If your travel destination happens to be Sydney, here are some tips on how to spend your time there and how to find the perfect hotel.

If you are tired of all the ordinary hotels you normally stay in, and you want to experience something different, one option could be a boutique hotel. A boutique hotel is a small, luxury hotel that normally has a theme to it. It is very different from your everyday hotels, if nothing else, then simply because of the interesting design. It often has a homely atmosphere partly because of the small number of rooms, and also because of the combination of rustic elements with urban and chic décor. It is a perfect solution for anyone with a fun and eccentric personality. You can choose from many hotels depending on what you like. Gardens, restaurants, luxurious bedrooms, sea views, you name it, a boutique hotel in Sydney will probably have it.

Once you’ve settled the accommodation problem, you want to pick the right season if possible. The best time to be in Australia is definitely from December to February. You will be able to experience the true tropical summer there and along those lines, the first thing you should do is, of course, go to the beach. One of the prettiest is Bondi Beach. If you like white sand and clear turquoise water then this is the place for you. Another convenience about this beach is that it has many salons and shops in the vicinity, so if that is a part of your plan, you will certainly have where to shop. The perfect time for your beach trip is early in the morning if you want to avoid the crowd and this way, you can leave early and see what else this city has to offer.

The first thing you think about when you hear Sydney is probably the Sydney Opera House and you definitely don’t want to miss it. The program often offers tours with a dinner or a ticket for theatre or ballet afterward. If that is something you are interested in, you can always find the program online and choose what suits you. If not, a simple tour is also available where you will get to learn more about the Sydney Opera House. One more thing that you will get to enjoy is the Harbour Bridge which is near the Opera House, and it is an attraction by itself.

Since you have had one day of sightseeing and walking, you should relax on your second day. Take some time and enjoy the summer breeze in one of the restaurants at the beach. Some even have open rooftops from which you will be able to get the perfect view. One example is Bondi Icebergs which offers the perfect Italian menu with all seasonal foods.

After lunch, you can choose among many ferry rides available. Watson Bay is one of the most beautiful ones and you can even combine it with a perfect afternoon coastal walk.

To finish the night off, explore the rich nightlife in Sydney. There are many clubs that offer dance music, R&B, salsa or even live shows from famous artists. So, if you are lucky, maybe some of them will be there. Either way, don’t miss out on a fun night out on the town.

48 hours is certainly not enough time to experience Sydney the right way, but these few are a good start. Combining sightseeing, relaxing, walking and dancing, you will fall in love with this city and definitely want to come again.
