Last year I graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, a place which I feel so grateful to for all that they have shown me and an experience which I simply couldn’t have even considered prior to enrolling with them. I studied on the New York campus and the 3 years which I spent there is something that I won’t forget for as long as I live. If any of you are lucky enough to be selected as a student at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy then here is the experience which you are letting yourself in for.
Teachers
The first point which I want to make is about the teachers and the professors at this college, they are of the very highest standard that you could expect. Most of the teachers have either worked on Broadway and big budget shows in the past, or they are currently involved in theaters throughout the city. The men and women who are teaching you have been there are done it and they know just how hard it can be to make it in the arts. This is why you can expect them to push you harder than you’ve ever been pushed before and you can expect them to raise the bar incredibly high.
Students
You will make so many friends during your time at AMDA and whilst there isn’t generally too much time for a social life, you will be working closely with students from all over the campus. There is plenty of time to meet people and you can learn more and more about people because of the amount of time that you spend with them. There is something about a conversation at 3 in the morning, after 6 hours of non-stop rehearsals that really makes you open up to people!
Brutal
Make no mistake, you are in for one of the most brutal experiences of your life, constantly questioning whether or not you are good enough, competing for success and being built up and knocked down on multiple occasions. You need to be tough to make it through this course, not everyone is and I saw numerous students quite because they couldn’t hack it. You will have fun for sure, you will witness amazing highs and disastrous lows and all of it will make you into a better performer.
Success
If you work hard and you focus on your own abilities, listen to what your feedback is and raise your levels then you will succeed here. All of the teachers and the faculty want you to succeed and they push you hard because of that. Of all my friends who made it to the end of this course they are better people and better performers because of it. This is something which you should remember throughout your course, that you will be a better performer because of it, and that means that your career prospect look a lot more attractive.
