Why You Should Spend Your Gap Year Volunteering

Considering taking some time off between high school and college? There are many benefits to spending your gap year volunteering. Click here to learn more!

Sometimes, we get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life that we forget how lucky we are. This is especially true for soon-to-be high school and college graduates.

Graduation is a major step towards the future – one some people get overwhelmed preparing to take. Between final exams, saying goodbyes, and all the details of looking ahead, many students feel like they need a vacation. Some even take a gap year.

A gap year is pretty much an extended summer or winter vacation. It’s a break many students plan for themselves, as an alternative to continuing on in their education right away.

Some gap years are spent traveling and backpacking, working and saving money, or even studying for major exams. A great option, though, is to spend a gap year volunteering.

Here are all the reasons you should take your time off from school in service of others.

Get Off the Couch

This first point may sound a bit silly, but think about it – with no more time to spend on going to class, studying, attending involvement meetings, and getting work done, how are you going to fill your days?

You may think you deserve a few hours of being a couch potato, which is fair to say. But, you have to plan something that won’t leave you waking up one day and realize you’ve spent a few months on the couch.

Do something with your gap year that means something.

To spend a gap year volunteering means to give yourself that much-needed break and to create positive change in the world at the same time. People take vacations all the time, but few have the dedication to commit their free time to a bigger cause.

Experience Life from a Different Perspective

Out of all the best volunteer abroad programs out there, one thing is for sure – you’re going to have your world turned upside down, and in the best of ways.

If you’ve ever been out of the country before, you have a small idea of what this means. But, regardless of how well traveled you are, keep in mind this is a year-long commitment.

It’s not a quick stop-and-go of service. It’s a time to dig deep into the world around you; to taste the food and learn the history and try to speak the language. This is sure to be unlike any vacation you’ve ever taken before.

Dive Into One of Your Passions

Sometimes, deciding to spend a gap year volunteering is not about knowing if you want to volunteer or not, but rather, where you want to go! Instead of looking at this opportunity in terms of the destination, think about what you’re passionate about.

Do you want to go into the medical field? Are you interested in ecological development and sustainability? Do you get goosebumps thinking about standing up for human rights?

These are the things you should debate as you decide where to go.

As great as all the different cultures out there are, the best match for you is the place where you can work on something that you’re deeply connected to. This will make you a more committed volunteer, which has a result on how well the project you’re a part of goes.

Discover New Things About Yourself

Maybe you know exactly what your passion is, and how you can express that through volunteering. Maybe it takes you a bit of time to decide where you want to spend your gap year volunteering.

Either way, you’re sure to discover so many new things about who you are once you’re doing the work asked of you. You may realize the educational path you’re on needs a bit of an adjustment, or decide to switch career choices altogether.

Or, you may just come to know yourself better on a more intimate level. Maybe you learn patience and understanding, or selflessness and the value of community. Such things aren’t taught in textbooks, and sometimes, it takes getting to know complete strangers to find these qualities within.

Improve the Skills You Already Know You Have

What if you already consider yourself to be pretty resourceful, or giving, or patient? Great – volunteering reinforces these values.

Whether you’re about to enter college or go out into the real world, you need to stand your ground firmly. This is both in terms of a practical sense and personal sense.

The time after your gap year is going to test you in terms of how independent you really are and how well you manage your finances. It’s going to bring out the discipline in you and show you your true character. Avoid any surprises by volunteering during your gap year.

Such efforts will strengthen the skills you already have. Plus, they’ll teach you a thing or two about the other tools you’ll need to navigate life.

Creating Lasting Memories, and Make an Impact

Whether you go away to nose-dive into a passion of yours or to do a bit of soul-searching, you’re in for the adventure of a lifetime.

Through volunteering with other young Americans and interacting with the locals of wherever you end up, there is so much to discover. As you learn about this new, interesting place, you’re taking a journey within. You’ll feel this while working, resting, and playing.

A gap year awakens your senses. It shows you just how powerful, courageous, and giving you can be, which are lessons that carry over into anything you do.

By the way, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Something or someone is bound to make a profound impact while you’re volunteering during your gap year. The only way for this to happen, though, is to get there.

How to Become a Travel Nurse

Source

If you ever wanted to travel and stay in the healthcare industry at the same time, you should consider a career as a travel nurse. Depending on its nature, the length of each assignment may vary, but generally, it’s around the 13 weeks mark. If you are willing to put in the necessary work, even international travel might not be out of question in the long run. Now, the question is how to become a travel nurse? Let’s find out.

The Necessary Education

As is obvious, you will need the proper education and for that, you will have to become a registered nurse first by completing an accredited college nursing program after high school. In case you are already a registered nurse, it is recommended that you complete your RN to MSN as well. While even BSN is not always a requirement for working as a travel nurse, it will most definitely help during appointment if you have the higher qualifications on your resumé. In case you can’t leave your job as a nurse at the moment, you can complete your MSN online because the program is much more flexible and economic when done on the internet.

Obtain Experience

Experience is another necessity if you want to be a travel nurse and although the requirements may vary, check out the following general requirements that usually apply in case of most jobs.

  • You must have the experience of being a nurse at a registered institution for at least a year or preferably more
  • You may also need to have specialization in certain fieldslike critical care, emergency and trauma, cardiac nursing, etc.

Licensing

Nursing licenses are necessary to practice in any location and in the US, a nurse practitioner’s license from one state isn’t valid in another. The good news is that you don’t need to apply for a license each time you change a state as a travel nurse if your home state is a part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). If it isn’t though, your employer will likely have to take care of the temporary licenses necessary for you to practice in a particular US state.

Tax Home

Tax free stipends are a big incentive for working as a traveling nurse, but you need to first understand how that works. Consider the points below to take full advantage of what’s in place.

  • You will have to establish and maintain a “tax home” first
  • You will have to establish that your office or place of employment is sufficiently distant enough for you to stay there overnight
  • If you do not have a tax home established, your stipends will become taxable

Basically, these four are all that you need to concern yourself with in order to work as a traveling nurse. However, just like any other job that is a bit out of the ordinary, there are a lot of other details as well, which you will come to know with time. Nevertheless, as long as you have your degrees, experience and license, there’s little that can stop you from becoming a travel nurse.

Awesome Ways To Make Some Extra Cash

Source

Have you been eyeing up a new gadget or toy that you really want but you can’t find the disposable income in order to purchase it worry and stress free? Maybe you have been thinking about purely putting a bit of extra cash away for a rainy fay or for that special holiday and you can’t find the space between bills, rent or mortgage and car payments. You aren’t alone in your quest for more disposable cash and this article will highlight a couple of great ways you can earn some side money to help you have more room in your account for fun things or saving!

Sell Unwanted, Used or Second Hand Items

This is a big thing for people these days who are looking to make some extra cash and have a hankering to clear out the loft or basement. Some unwanted items that just sit around collecting dust can be incredibly valuable – even books that you think are only worth a few dollars could be worth hundreds if they are rarer copies, first editions and the like. Clothes, toys, video games, old music players and the like can fetch high prices on selling websites like Ebay, Music Magpie and more. As a bonus it means you get rid of some of the clutter in the house to make way for your new toys and gadgets! Win, win!

Dog Walking, Babysitting

These might sound pretty standard in terms of things to do for some side cash, but if you get a large list of local clients your overheads are essentially nothing (okay, maybe some little baggies for clean ups), but that’s it! People are always looking for babysitters as well so babysitting can become quite lucrative quite quickly and as most nurseries and daycares charge per child that means you can as well – albeit maybe a bit less than daycares in order to create a drive to hire you over them! There are some bonuses to both of these aside from extra money as well and that’s getting exercise by walking dogs and being able to stay home with your own kids if you’re babysitting. Becoming a day-home operator is something to also consider – essentially being a parent other parents pay to stay home and care for children all day – but getting relevant licensing and insurances to cover this idea can be costly so look into it first in your individual area.

Playing Games Online

Sound too good to be true? It isn’t! With awesome online live casinos in the UK with no download required such as William Hill, there is always a game to play any time of day, where ever you are. Casinos online can be incredibly lucrative especially with William Hill bonuses and free spins and the like. So try your luck today and check out an online casino and see how you can make a bit of extra money while having fun too.

So there you have some great suggestions on making some extra money to help pay for those costs that might crop up or to help save for that special something. So get started and watch the money start coming in! Have fun!

Great Day Sessions to Have With Your Staff

Source

It is the staff who you rely on for your business to become a success, your staff are the front line of your company, they are the ones who help to create the brand and the reputation of your business and it is them who ensure that the business runs like clock work. As Haris Ahmed Chicago based leadership and staffing guru says, it is for this reason that you must look after the staff, you need to ensure that they have everything that they need, a comfortable work place, a friendly environment and of course, all of the trading and tools which they need to do the job.

A great activity for your staff is to hold various day sessions, different activities which serve to improve their time at work and today we will look at some great ideas for which ones work well for them.

Team Building

A team building day can be a great way to get the staff together for some fun activities which can help to unify your work force. This work shop should feature plenty of fun and many different team activities where the team will need to overcome challenges. It is important that you mix up the team so that people who perhaps don’t spend much time with each other at work, have to join together and work with one an other to reach a goal. Team building exercises every 6 months or so is a great way to keep your team working for each other and can help break down conflicts.

First Aid

Nobody would like to think that something terrible could happen in the workplace but unfortunately, they do and you can prepare your staff with a basic first aid course. A first aid course will give your staff the basics around CPR, how to treat cuts and wounds and what to do in case of an emergency, this may not be an incredibly fun activity for your staff but it could end up saving someone’s life in the future.

Conflict Management

Your leadership team should definitely get involved in a conflict management course, this will help them understand how they can best deal with issues between members of the work force. Conflicts do happen at work, it is a simple fact of life but these should be nipped in the bud as soon as possible. What a conflict management workshop will do is to give your leaders within the business, the tools and the confidence to successfully deal with any conflicts which happen to arise.

These are just a few samples of the types of courses which you could hold for your staff to better equip them in the work place. If you are worried about losing trade or business whilst you run the work shops then try to run two different sessions and half your team for each one, this will allow your business to still run whilst you are helping the other half of your team to do their job better.
